Inhabitant Bill of Rights
A Manifesto
WRITTEN BY IBRAHIM GREENIDGE, RA, NOMA, AIA, NCARB | AUGUST 2023
CLEAN WATER. We deserve fresh potable water. Not another Reservoir Hill; Deep Water Horizon in the Gulf of Mexico; Mill Creek, KS; Flint, MI; Jackson, MS; Newark, NJ.
CLEAN AIR. We deserve air free from satellite debris, pollutants, and irritants.
LIVE FOOD. We must eat organic food made without pesticides or genetic modification. It is necessary that we instill growth, production, processing and distribution of agriculture where its insecurity exists.
CO-GENERATIVE HOUSING. We must eradicate housing insecurity and end the era of commercial and residential buildings as parasites, sucking the life out of us and the earth.
UNIVERSAL SPACES. We must investigate design solutions that consider all people with a variety of abilities and provide opportunities for them to gather. We must end the design and construction of carceral spaces that dismiss building codes.
GREEN SPACES. We must design for physical and mental benefits. Green space encourages exercise and improves immune functions, decreases noise and air pollution. It encourages socialization and respite.
ENERGY. We must design residential and commercial buildings that are independently energy sufficient and sustainable. With the takeover of technology and cloud based storage, we also must take a role in ensuring data centers and server farms are fully sustainable.
WASTE. We must develop systems that reuse waste, and make companies that manufacture responsible for the end of their products’ lifecycle. And, therefore, we must clean the debris in space, in our air, in our water and in our streets.
